What is Freedom of Information?
The Freedom of Information Act came into effect on 21 April, 1998. This Act gives you the right to access certain records held by the Authority.
What can I ask for?
You can ask for the following records that may be held by the Adoption Authority of Ireland:
- Any records relating to you personally, with the exception of records concerning, or arising from, the making of an adoption order or the recognition of an intercountry adoption effected outside the State, within the meaning of the Adoption Act 2010.
- If you are an adoptee, a person who was nursed-out/boarded-out, or the subject of an illegal birth registration seeking access to your records or regarding time spent as a resident in an institution please apply under the Birth Information and Tracing Act 2022 via www.birthinfo.ie
Queries or requests for information, as opposed to requests for records, are not valid requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2014.
What do I need to include in my request?
- You must state you are seeking the requested records under the FOI Act 2014.
- Any requests for personal records must be accompanied by photographic identification.
- Acceptable forms of photographic identification are: Passport; Drivers Licence (including provisional licence); and Public Services Card.
If another person is acting on your behalf to apply: you will also need to provide a written copy of your consent; and a copy of your photo ID for us to engage with the person you have nominated.
Processing FOI applications
- You will receive an acknowledgement of your FOI application within 10 working days.
- A decision on your application will normally be made within 20 working days (unless an extension is invoked).
- If your request is refused you will be given reasons for the refusal.
